It’s Spring in the Catskills

The cold, winter months are now behind us, the leaves have returned to the trees, and the mornings are filled with the beautiful sounds of bird songs. It’s spring in the Sullivan County Catskills, and that means it’s time to enjoy the outdoors again.

The Sullivan Event Center is nestled in the heart of the Sullivan County Catskills, meaning that it’s perfectly positioned as a base camp for the numerous hiking trails in the area. Here are four hiking destinations within 20 minutes of The Sullivan Event Center:

Wolf Brook Multiple Use Area
Wolf Brook Multiple Use Area is the closest hiking destination to The Sullivan Event Center. It has two hiking trails. The trails are easy and short, which make them perfect for beginners, children, and older members of the family with mobility issues.

There’s also fishing access at the two streams that run through the park, Wolf Pond Brook and Mullet Brook. Both streams are stocked with trout and are tributaries of the Neversink River.

Bashakill Wildlife Management Area
Bashakill Wildlife Management Area is home to the largest freshwater wetland in southeastern New York. It’s home to a variety of wildlife as well as 15 miles of hiking trails. We recommend the trail that follows the historic D&H Canal for its beauty and historical significance.

There’s also fishing access at the Basha Kill, which holds largemouth bass, chain pickerel, panfish, and bowfin.

Wurtsboro Ridge State Forest
Wurtsboro Ridge State Forest provides access to the 71-mile Shawangunk Ridge Trail as well as the 356-mile Long Path. Besides offering access to the two backpacking trails, Wurtsboro Ridge State Forest also has several old roads and abandoned rail beds which are maintained as multi-use trails.

There is no public access to certain sections of the park due historic lead mining activities that have left lead-contaminated tailings and abandoned mines. These areas are clearly marked, but visitors to the park are still warned:

Users of the unrestricted portions of the property should make sure to wash their hands and the hands of children thoroughly with uncontaminated water before eating, drinking, or smoking during or after a visit to this property. In addition, shoes/boots and pets should be thoroughly cleaned prior to bringing them indoors.

Roosa Gap State Forest
Roosa Gap State Forest is home to one of the most beautiful trails on our list. A stretch of trail shared by the Shawangunk Ridge Trail and Long Path runs through the park and offers spectacular views of the surrounding valley.

The park boasts of a large variety of wildlife, including at-risk species such as the peregrine falcon, Cooper’s hawk, red-shouldered hawk, golden-winged warbler, and the timber rattlesnake.
